“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful “
Most spring cleans start with decluttering and throwing away useless items. Today, social media is bombarded with cleaning and decluttering gurus who have reformed cleaning into an aspirational activity for those with a preoccupation for order. Here at Greenscents, we prefer a more balanced approach which ties in with natural cleaning and the cycle of the seasons. Spring is a new beginning and a great time to take stock and redefine your living spaces.
So once you have discarded unnecessary items, how do you prepare for a natural spring clean?
First decide on the areas of the home you want to tackle. March is a great time to open windows and let some fresh air blow through, removing stale smells and cooking odours. It makes sense to clean windows now and Greenscents Nonscents Multi -Surface Spray is a great companion here (it is important not to use a fragranced spray or the essential oils will smear the glass). Alternatively a bucket of water with a cup full of vinegar makes a fine alternative. An old toothbrush is helpful to remove grime from window sills and ledges. Make sure you buff up the glass with a soft cloth and admire your handiwork!
Using steam to clean non-washable things
A steam cleaner is an excellent tool for a natural spring clean. Steam kills off bacteria and this method is great for cleaning upholstery, curtains, cushion covers and mattresses that cannot be washed. Steam cleaners are ideal for those with allergies to fragrance but can be partnered with organic essential oils for a more refreshing finish.
Natural organic cleaning for your tech
Organic vinegar makes a fantastic organic all purpose cleaner and can be diluted with warm water to tackle many tasks. Blinds can be wiped and rugs brushed with warm diluted vinegar solution to remove dirt and odours. A vinegar solution can be used to clean laptops and keyboards. Once your device is switched off, wipe a cloth that has been soaked in vinegar solution and then squeezed tightly across screens and keyboards. Cotton buds dipped in the same solution are ideal for the small areas between keys. Descaling kettles is easy with vinegar: just fill your kettle with undiluted vinegar, boil and then leave overnight before rinsing thoroughly with clean water.
Wash all your soft furnishings
Launder throws, cushion covers and blankets using Greenscents Laundry Liquid and Laundry Conditioner using the wool cycle at 30 degrees. If possible, line dry otherwise an electrically heated airer is an excellent eco-friendly alternative if you don’t have access to the outside.
